The Laboratory pursuing partnerships with its customers.
Laboratory ECCA was established in 1980 by Dr. Frank Benijts as one of the first private and independent labs in Flanders. The original business model was based on ecotoxicological and chemical analyses, a combination that Frank Benijts had come to know during his studies in the United States. Soon, however, the European market appeared to have different needs and the range of analyses was extended with food analyses.
The combination of nutritional analyses with analyses of wastewater was a success. ECCA positioned itself to its customers as a partner and consultant in both processes. A role which, until today, still persists and that is unique in today's laboratory landscape. The demand for certified and accredited laboratory analyses grew in importance and ECCA did not hesitate to certify itself as one of the first labs in Flanders according to ISO 9000 and later on according to ISO 17025. The lab grew steadily and moved from the small premises in Zwijnaarde to a new location in Merelbeke in 1998.
Meanwhile, the second generation made its appearance in the family business. Eva Benijts proved, through economic background, to be the right person to manage the company financially and commercially. Tom Benijts uses his scientific background to lead the production of the laboratory.
With the acquisition of BIOTOX, a respected food laboratory in Jabbeke, ECCA obtained a strong partner in 2007. Together, the two companies have over 50 years experience in chemical, microbiological and biological analyses. In 2011, a cooperation agreement was concluded with the Laboratory of Food Microbiology and Food Preservation at the University of Ghent and in 2012 a takeover of the customer base of Silliker Belgium followed.
During the last three decades, the ECCA has grown from a one-man-business to a mature company with more than 90 employees. There has always been strongly invested in R&D and this shows itself in the extensive scope to analysis the lab can offer. The lab has the most advanced equipment in the area of chromatography and other laboratory techniques.
